I read this great article today that appeared in the February issue of Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and it contained some really exciting information on a super simple way we can control our weight. The article was the results of a study that followed 18,311 US adults and asked them simply to drink more plain water. The results were pretty astounding. Regardless of how the water was consumed (tap water, from a cooler, drinking fountain or bottle) the majority of those who increased their water intake by just 1% reduced their total calorie intake and consumed less saturated fat, sugar, sodium and cholesterol. Those who increased their water consumption by 1-3 cups decreased their total caloric intake by 68-205 calories, their sodium intake by 78-235mg, their sugar consumption by 5-18 grams and the amount of cholesterol eaten by 7-21 grams.
Just imagine that for a moment. You could potentially lose up to 20 pounds in a year by simply drinking 1-3 more glasses of plain water every day! I think that’s incredible and amazing news, and definitely is great encouragement to grab a glass of water whenever I can. Beyond being a great way to control our weight, there a myriad of other benefits that would likely happen, too. Improved skin tone is the first thing I think of. Potentially fewer headaches due to dehydration. In can lower your blood pressure, combat fatigue, and even help with certain, shall we say, digestive disorders. I really can’t think of an easier, or less expensive way to improve all those conditions.
So get up and grab a glass right now!
Next week I’ll share ALL of my “how to drink more water” tips with you (and I have a bunch, because drinking more water is something I struggle with). Do you have a tip you’d like to share?
